(T fie QCoße Montgomery College, Germantown Campus Volume 2 Issue 1 September 21, 1990 NEW & IMPROVED Cafeteria Re-opens by Laura G. Hume The Germantown Campus community may once again satisfy raging appetites with the re-opening of the cafeteria located on the lower level of the Humanities Building. The cafeteria underwent a facelift over the summer. The College replaced seasoned tables and tattered carpeting with a color coordinated decor matching the Campus colors of green and gold. In addition, white table vases filled with silk flowers add a nice touch to the improved facility. Canteen Dining Services is currently under contract to provide sustenance for the campus community. The hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cafeteria serves breakfast 7:30 - 9:30 a.m.; a continental breakfast 9:30 -11:00 a.m.; and lunch 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. The new cafeteria sports a salad and sandwich bar where patrons pay for items by the ounce. Furthermore, the grill serves up old favorites such as hamburgers and fries plus new additions like mini-pizzas. In substitution for hot entrees, the cafeteria will have a different hot sandwich special every day. Germantown Campus Dining Service Manager Barbara Bassett explained that she is "always ready to hear feedback about the new service." According to Bassett, the cafeteria staff are taking note of the popular menu items and specials. She plans on offering such items on a regular basis. With the cafeteria closing at 2:30 in the afternoon, the question of food service for evening students was raised to Robert F. Cephas, Director of Auxiliary Services. According to Cephas, Auxiliary Services is investigating the option of placing vending sandwich and coffee machines in the cafeteria area. Future plans call for the cafeteria to remain open after 2:30 for students to eat and study. WANTED: High Technology Center Committee Seeks Student Support by Jason W. Edgmon Imagine trying to register for a course and being told that the Germantown Campus has exceeded it’s capacity and can no longer accept more students. By the fall of 1995, the campus will be unable to meet the anticipated demand for admission by County residents. It is critical that architectural planning funds be committed now for the construction of the High Technology Instructional Center. The addition of this building to the campus will provide classroom and laboratory space for courses and programs related to the high technology industries of Montgomery County. As a result, Dr. Stanley Dahlman, provost of the Germantown Campus, has organized a student committee to gather support for the fourth campus building. The committee is comprised of 10 full and part-time, day and evening, traditional and non-traditional aged students. Mr. Tom Price, Dean of Student Development and Mrs. Janet Johnson, Coordinator of Student Activities are serving as advisors to the committee. The committee’s primary goal is to inform the student body and gather their support In order to achieve this goal, the committee is preparing a packet of information outlining the need for the building. Enclosed with the packet is a postage-paid reply card for students to indicate their support of the High Technology Instructional Center. In addition to the mailing, the committee will sponsor a "coffee & conversation" during the day and evening hours to display statistics justifying the need for the building plus answer any questions or comments. With the information gathered from the students, the committee will prepare a position statement to be included in the College’s report to the State government. Furthermore, the committee will be available during the month of October to speak at forums and community meetings in support of the building. With a projected enrollment of approximately 5,000 students for the fall of 1995, it is imperative that planning for the High Technology Instructional Center begin today.
